UK Chilli Stand Off for The Oakheart Trophy

The UK’s first ‘Chilli Stand Off’ is on Saturday 22 October at The Tramshed in Shoreditch.
We’ve invited eight great chefs and restaurants to challenge for The Oakheart Trophy and be declared the ‘UK’s Chilli Champion’. Tickets are £25 to try all the Chillies and help us find the ‘Best Tasting Chilli in Britain’. You can buy them here.
The competitors include Chilango, Leon, Chef Jocky, Lucky Chip, Gizzi Erskine, All Star Lanes, Dock Kitchen and Carl Clarke of Disco Bistro. All of the Chillies will be tasted blind and everyone attending gets to vote for their favourite.
Bartenders from Milk & Honey and Danger of Death will provide the drinks from their festival bar. There will be free rum and lots of it including the brand new spicy Bacardi Oakheart and a giant barrel of Oakheart Grog.
The bar will be open all day from noon until 10pm and the Chilli tasting will take place between 1-4pm with the winner announced by 6pm. The ticket price includes three free drinks and we’ll be running a pay bar after that with the usual super-reduced Tweat Up prices. There will be music and the after party is at XOYO.

The Competitors

Dan Houghton, Chilango - Chilango serves spectacularly moreish, wonderfully fresh, blindingly good tacos and burritos from three central London sites. They’ve just launched a brand new Chilli Beef at their Chancery lane site and it is awesome. You can tell this not only by the taste but also from the smiles in the neverending line outside the door; they know what’s coming.
Fred Dickieson, Leon - When Leon opened their first restaurant in Carnaby Street in 2003, they revolutionised fast food overnight. Their fresh, fast and healthy approach to food is the future and they now run 11 restaurants. They make amazing meatballs and their Superfood Salad has had more imitators than Elvis. Now it’s time to find out if they can also cook a mean Chilli and we will be the judge of that.
Ben Denner, Lucky Chip - Ben makes London’s best street burger from his shiny trailer on Netil Market E8. He started in the early summer and has been climbing the burger charts ever since. His El Chappo burger is the only scientifically proven way to prevent or cure a hangover. Eat an El Chappo and you need never worry about the morning after again. He also serves great hot dogs drowned in his home-made Chilli and the Chilli Cheese Fries are a meaty, cheesy joy.
Chef Jocky, The Fat Duck - James is Head of Creative Development at the UK’s most celebrated restaurant, The Fat Duck. Ever wondered what a 3 Michelin star Chilli tastes like? We’re about to find out. Bookies favourite.
Gizzi Erskine - Gizzi is a chef, television presenter and a girl. She is best known for presenting Channel 4’s Cook Yourself Thin and Cookery School and being the author of Kitchen Magic. She knows her way around a cow and a Scotch Bonnet and lives in Hackney, so she’s well up for a scrap. You know her Chilli will be fierce.
Stevie Parle, Dock Kitchen – Stevie trained at River Café, Moro and Petersham Nurseries before making Dock Kitchen his permanent home. He is OFM Young Chef of the Year and has never made a Chilli before. Wild card potential winner then.
Stephen Collins, All Star Lanes - Eat Drink Bowl Boom! The All Star Texas Chilli is a favourite with their regulars but is it good enough to compete alongside this mighty line-up? We reckon they could be about to kick some Chilli ass with what they’ve got planned.
Carl Clarke, Disco Bistro – Carl is the madcap chef behind recent ad hoc nosh projects Rock Lobsta and The English Launderette. He’s always on the look out for the next challenge and this week, Chilli is it. Expect Carl’s Chilli to be like no other.

The Judges

There are three judges for the UK Chilli Stand Off.
Daniel Young, the London-based food critic and 'cafenatic,' is on a constant quest for the next breakthrough in taste. He has shared his discoveries in a total of five cookbooks, three restaurant guides and his Young And Foodish app. His Burger Mondays are now the stuff of legend. But his Spag Wednesdays aren't half bad either. Follow him @youngandfoodish
Jonathan Downey, owner of The Rushmore Group, is all about the Big Night Out, whether it's at London's original speakeasy, Milk & Honey, Redhook, or Giant Robot. Downey is also the patron saint of street food, and likes to host his Tweat Up events at the drop of a hat. Follow him @DowneyJD
Richard Johnson is the author of Street Food Revolution and the founder of the British Street Food Awards. The first prize at the Awards in 2010 was a mixer – in 2011, it was a pitch at the Olympics, and a business makeover from Marks & Spencer. Johnson is a journalist and broadcaster who spells chilli with one L. Expect the sparks to fly. Follow him @richardjohnsonx

Street Food

When the Chilli runs out we’ve got some of London’s best street food vendors to see us on into the night:
  • Lisa from Yum Bun - delicious steamed buns with pork, cucumber, hoisin, kimchee and sriracha (Thai hot sauce). Lisa can usually be found at Broadway Market school yard on a Saturday.
  • Mark The Rib Man who makes ‘London’s best ribs’ served in a roll or a wrap with his legendary hot sauce. Mark gets up at 3am every Sunday to set up on Brick Lane and he always sells out.
  • Simon from Luardos whose fish tacos with mango salsa and three secret sauces are crispy, crunchy, soft and spicy. Simon is bringing his new van, Mary, along for the day.
  • Jez from The Bowler. Jez plies his trade at Brockley Market on Saturdays. He makes sublime meatballs with linguine and wears a bowler hat.
